Desoldering Equipment

Electronic components and circuit boards with soldered connections are removed using desoldering equipment. It is a crucial tool for maintaining and overhauling electronic assemblies without harming the individual parts or the circuit board. When repairing damaged or outdated components, rescuing pieces, or fixing soldering errors, desoldering equipment is especially helpful.

What is Desoldering?

Desoldering is the reverse process of soldering, to remove the soldering joint and components from PCB to repair, replace, or for troubleshooting and salvage.

There are special tools and techniques to desolder the object. The important equipment and tools are:

Desoldering Pump
Desoldering guns (hot air guns)
Vacuum pumps with different tips and nozzles
Rework Stations

Electric Desoldering Pump

It is also known as a “Solder sucker”, and it works to remove the solder from PCB.

The Desoldering pump can be of two types:-

Plunger Style: The plunger type comes with a piston which when triggered by pressing a button sucks the solder off the soldered joint.
Bulb Style: The bulb-type Desoldering pump sucks the solder by squeezing a rubber bulb in and out.

Vacuum Desoldering Pump

A hot air pump blows enough hot air to melt the solder and for Desoldering by removal before the solder solidifies by a vacuum pump or by tweezers.

So, the working of the desolder pump is to heat the solder connection and to suck the solder away.

Desoldering Gun

A heat gun is usually used to desolder the SMD (Surface Mount Device) components. In this process, the heat gun is pointed toward the Desoldering components.

This will quickly melt the solder and then be lifted with tweezers. Always keep the board flat during the process to avoid any mistakes.

Desoldering Wick

It is also known as Desoldering braid or solder wick, which is a fine copper braid wire coated with rosin flux.

This copper braid/wick works in the process of melting the solder flux and allows the copper wick to absorb it.

Desoldering Station

They are useful for the removal of components from PCBs and rework on PCB boards.

Hot-air rework stations are good for simple jobs and you can use them for preheating components or to reflow components like DIP (Dual Inline Packaging), QFP (Quad Flat Packaging), and other ICs.
